Our Hastings family can claim a relationship to many world leaders. In most cases they are distant cousins. In this generation we can claim a direct relationship to royalty. Molly Lowell was a member of the New England Lowell family. Maybe you have heard about “Boston, the land of the bean and the cod, where the Lowells talk only to Cabots and Cabots talk only to God.” Molly’s Great Great Great Grandfather was the emigrant Percival Lowell. He arrived in Massachusetts from Somerset, England in 1639. Two noted medieval genealogists, Brandon Fradd and Douglas Richardson have traced the ancestry of Percival’s Mother, Christian (Percival) Lowell, to Edward I, King of England. Thus my 20th Great Grandfather was Edward I. If you don’t recognize Edward I, he was called Long shanks. That’s right he was the miserable King in the movie “Braveheart” who would not grant William Wallace his freedom. We may also be related to royalty through Molly’s Mother Martha Bradbury. We do know that Molly’s Great Great Great Grandmother; the wife of Thomas Bradbury, Mary Perkins was convicted in Salem of witchcraft but was able to avoid execution.
